Hoichi Kurisu and his team came to us to design a portfolio website that could showcase his magnificent gardens, and his philosophies of flow (Ki-sew) and emptiness (Ma). Hoichi has been building gardens since 1972 and has created wondrous sanctuaries around the world. He truly believes in the the restorative properties of his gardens and that spaces like the ones he creates are a necessary component to human well-being.
The goal of the site was to create a minimalistic portfolio that flows (like his gardens) seamlessly. We kept the focus on large images and simple unobtrusive design flourishes to keep the user engaged with the beauty of his gardens. A simple navigation system was designed to be accessible, but out of the way as to keep the focus on the content. It disappears when not needed and can easily be accessed when desired.
Hoichi’s work speaks for itself, so we created simple intro descriptions of the projects and then large images with simple captions to provide context and engagement. We created spaces to learn about his philosophy, his story and all his services while being consistent and aware of the flow of the site, keeping it calm, relaxed, and intentional.
